This is the first full-scale biography of Eleanor Marx, the daughter of Karl Marx. She played an important part in the in troduction of Marxian Socialism and Internationalism into Britain. She was also a dedicated champion of the new drama which began under Ibsen's influence. A warm friend and a fierce enemy, she was passionately sincere. Her informal union with Edward Aveling, a Marxist and an aspiring dramatist, turned out to be disastrous for her. This study draws upon her own letters, many hitherto unpublished, as well as on other sources, and throws new light on the history of Marxism as well as on her personal tragedy.
