Facing union slogans like "Dare to struggle, Dare to Win!" backed up by action on the job, employers and governments decided the militant Builders Labourers Federation had to go. Conservative governments took the first steps in 1981, but it was Labor - backed by many union leaders - which finished the job. Subject to a Royal Commission, legal attacks and anti-union laws, the BLF was under siege for years. Then in 1986 the union was shut out and its members forced into other unions. The Federation fought back. This story of the union's fight for its life, much of it in the words of BLs, also provides a left-wing analysis of the major players and issues. Fighting back then and now - this book has lessons for us all.
