James P. Cannon was unique among the founding leaders of American communism in remaining true to the revolutionism that animated his youth. Repelled by the cynical opportunism, posturing and careerism in the Stalinised Communist International, Cannon in 1928 was won to Leon Trotsky's International Left Opposition, which was fighting to return the Soviet regime and the Comintern to the revolutionary internationalism of Lenin's time. Expelled from the Workers (Communist) Party, Cannon and some 100 factional supporters formed the nucleus of the first American Trotskyist organisation. Cannon built a 'faction against factionalism' which attempted to push the party in a revolutionary direction.

This book includes Cannon's writings in the debates which racked the party in the 1920s and some of his powerful internal party speeches. It sheds new light on the Stalinisation of the American Communist Party as well as the unique origins of American Trotskyism.
