In 1936, fascists attempted to take over Spain. In response, Spanish workers rose up and began the process of seizing power for themselves. They organised an army to fight the fascist coup and placed large swathes of production under workers’ control. In the ensuing political and military struggle, however, the revolutionary movement was betrayed and undermined from within, and ultimately it was defeated.

Felix Morrow wrote this classic Marxist account of the Spanish Civil War in 1938. His clear-headed and detailed analysis of the forces responsible for the defeat offers numerous lessons for revolutionaries today
