Rosa Luxemburg’s conception of revolutionary organizational structures—which were to be built from the bottom up on a consistently democratic basis—aligns far more closely with the needs of labor movements in advanced countries than Lenin’s conception from 1902–1904, which Stalinists worldwide copied while adding a bureaucratic twist. She understood more clearly than anyone that the structure of the revolutionary party and the relationship between the party and the class would profoundly influence not only the struggle against capitalism and for workers' power but also the ultimate fate of that power. She prophetically asserted that without the broadest workers' democracy, "officials behind their desks" would wrest political power from the workers; "socialism cannot be granted or imposed by decree."
