Novel first published in 1941, set in the Depression years and telling the story of two young people travelling around Australia seeking work. It was awarded the S H Prior Memorial Prize and the Gold Medal of the Australian Literature Society. The author was made an AO in 1980 and is well-known for such novels as 'The Honey Flour' and 'Ride on Stranger'.
