The term "Revolutionary Defeatism" is one of the most confused and confusing slogans in the history of the socialist movement. Usually attributed to Lenin, the slogan actually reflects the long history of the movement's attempt to decide how to react to the numerous conflicts leading up to World War I. Do we support our country which is under attack? Do we side with a victim of our own country's aggression even though the government of that victim is a repulsive dictatorship? Difficult questions. Are these debates still relevant? Take a look at the headlines in today's edition of your newspaper.
